Formes brèves modernes issues des cortèges de manifestants ou bombées à la va-vite sur les murs des villes insurrectionnelles, les slogans se situent à la frontière de la littérature et de la politique. Menaces, revendications, mots d'esprit, calembours ou rêveries utopiques forment la partition des multitudes révolutionnaires qui élaborent dans ces performances vocales ou scripturaires le sujet collectif "peuple".
Contre les slogans autoritaires des dictateurs et les slogans publicitaires des annonceurs, ces slogans inventent une langue commune de combat à l'heure où le peuple se manifeste pour réclamer un transfert de souveraineté. Longtemps négligé par les études théoriques, le slogan révolutionnaire a connu un regain d'intérêt à la faveur des mouvements révolutionnaires des années 2010 et suivantes : créations polyphoniques, trouvailles scripturaires, les slogans révolutionnaires ont émergé comme un genre à part, difficilement à saisir en raison de la fluidité de son cadre énonciatif et de son statut de matériau éphémère de lutte.
Littérature du "nous" par excellence, les slogans révolutionnaires font advenir un sujet pluriel par l'énonciation - profération, inscription - et par la création. Ils offrent le cas d'une poéticité singulière, une poéticité matricielle, qui inscrit l'acte de création dans un horizon discursif collectif, où l'invention est une façon pour l'individu de s'inscrire dans un mouvement public. En ce sens, ils constituent un cas exceptionnel de littérature politique faisant advenir un sujet collectif : leur langue formulaire est ainsi ce qui donne son texte au rassemblement des corps sur la place publique.
Cet ouvrage, issu d'une thèse conduite entre 2011 et 2016, prend le parti d'examiner à la fois les caractéristiques formelles et matérielles, les modalités d'élaboration et les vies sociales des slogans. Au-delà des différentes manifestations physiques, il s'agit ici de proposer une poétique d'un genre de discours contemporain, informé par ses usages sociaux et politiques, empruntant aux outils de l'anthropologie, de la rhétorique et de la littérature.
